Hiking and backpacking are two of the most popular outdoor activities in the United States. In 2022, hiking and outdoor equipment stores reported revenue of $7.3 billion. Several new technologies and devices can improve a person’s hiking experience.
Any hiking enthusiast using rechargeable technology and equipment must travel with a power source. There are many options for trail-ready power banks, but hikers should consider the advantages of solar power banks. These devices require no electricity and can keep all hiking tech online using the power of the sun. Some solar power banks include additional features, such as built-in safety flashlights. Meanwhile, the Garmin inReach Mini is a valuable satellite messaging resource that can be paired with smartphones. The inReach Mini is especially useful for hikers entering unfamiliar territory. The lightweight device can be fixed to the exterior of hiking packs, allowing the inReach Mini to communicate with rescue personnel and send text messages if needed. Garmin carries several additional hiking technologies and products, including the Fenix 7S Solar, a smartwatch device that provides in-depth metrics to individuals who want to refine their performance on the trail. The watch offers ClimbPro and RacePro features, plus detailed topographic maps. Hikers who enjoy multi-day treks will appreciate that the Garmin Fenix 7S Solar can hold a charge for two weeks. Not all hiking technology comes as a physical device to be included with other hiking gear. Many mobile applications have changed how hikers operate in the field. The AllTrails app, for instance, is available on all Android and IOS devices. It tracks various metrics and, more importantly, can help hikers avoid taking a wrong turn on the trail. On the other hand, hikers will always need simple, effective gear. Hydration bladders can be purchased in two- and three-liter versions. Bladders are easier to store than water bottles and can store larger amounts of liquid. Lifestraw may be a stronger option for individuals who prefer to drink straight from the source. Thanks to its straw-like design, the filter eliminates 99.99 percent of harmful bacteria and pathogens from a lake or river. Bug repellent is another hiking essential individuals should never hit the trail without, mainly when hiking near water. Various advances have been made with bug repellents in recent years; hikers should take the time to research different brands to avoid sticky, pungent aerosols in favor of newer products, like Thermacell, a portable anti-bug device with a 15-foot radius. Other modern hiking products are geared more towards entertainment and convenience on the trail. The JBL Clip 4 is a small portable speaker that can be attached to the exterior of a hiking pack. Music is an enjoyable accompaniment on the trail and an effective means of alerting nearby wildlife to the group’s presence. Finally, there is arguably no hiking equipment as iconic as the walking stick, commercially known as trekking poles. While some individuals might prefer finding a stick or branch on the trail, modern trekking poles can greatly improve hiking stability, increasing a hiker’s speed and reducing pressure on the body.
